I will give my opinion based on different categories.
Characters: Denji is more l developed than Yuji in my opinion. CSM is done, and so Denji has a largely completed arc. Makima and Reze are better villains than anyone in JJK yet (not close in terms of writing). Power and Aki are as good as Megumi and Nobara.
CSM wins for villains mostly.
Art: Again the art is great in both. It's hard for me to judge, but in terms of standout panels/visual symbolism I have to give it to CSM> Close though.
Story: CSM is complete in it's story while still leaving room for a sequel. JJK is in an intense arc, that could be a huge success but it remains to be seen. Chainsaw Man is the most wholesome manga i've read, because it's dark moments perfectly contrast and intensify the heartwarming, emotional, and comforting ones.
Philosophical aspects/real world themes: I'm rereading CSM now, but in the meantime I'd say it's equal. JJK contains a savage critique of Japanese conservatism, the bullying in schools/school shooters, climate change, and other compelling issues. (A lot through Gojo's character) CSM addresses some very personal and relevant themes concerning adolescence, poverty, and friendship, (Denji) along with gun violence and some more political topics.
Overall: CSM>JJK. Both are great, CSM is a masterpiece and JJK is getting there (Shibuya arc is there already), but it's just too soon for it.
Jujutsu Kaisen
I think Itadori is a better and more complex character than Denji. I think Gojo is the best character in both series though. Shibuya arc is better than any Csm arc for me. Fight choreography is by far better in JJK, JJK has a more fun cast, and I think it’s more consistently great. I would put JJK > Csm but not by much.
@Orangutan888 Its not really a completed story, it’s just the first part/arc. I really don’t see how Reze is better than all JJK characters though and I really dont see how it isn’t close. I can see that take with Makima, although maybe not that it’s not close.
Also seems like you throw the word masterpiece out there a shit ton. What makes a masterpiece for you because you even think Mugen Train is one, whereas when I read the arc in the manga, it was just aight.
Chainsaw Man is my favorite manga ever so there is no question on it's mastepiece status for me. Reze+Makima I meant are together better than JJK villains which I stand by, Mahito is pretty good, but the main villain not as much imo. I agree Gojo is one of the best in either series. I disagree about the fun cast and consistent greatness, because I think they both are.
It's close between them in my opinion, but Chainsaw Man Stands out more in terms of emotions, characters, and themes so far. I understand why someone would think differently though.
Demon Slayer movie was 10/10 in my opinion, for the animation/ music/ Rengoku. I have no problem giving a 10/10 to something I genuinely enjoyed wholeheartedly. It's better than most movies i've ever watched, and I think anime fans are overly negative in general, and don't appreciate things as much as they could. I usually use 10/10 and masterpiece interchangeably, as MAL does.
@FloppyFish69 Here's everything I genuinely consider a masterpiece by the more common definition within the community. I don't want to seem like I don't think critically about what I watch. I just try to enjoy stuff. And I think anime is often pretty damn good:
Bebop
Naruto
Evangelion
Made in Abyss
One Piece
Ghost in the Shell
Akira
Gundam
Perfect Blue
Grave of the Fireflies
Haruhi Suzumiya Series
Code Geass
Gurren Lagann

Puella Magi
Persona 3/4 Anime
HXH

AOT
Your Lie in April
Your Name
A Silent Voice
One Punch Man

Chainsaw Man
Grand Blue
Berserk
Magi
Jujutsu Kaisen
I feel like having so many tens just takes the value out of it. Personally I only have 5 tens in all animanga, and not many 9s either.
I wouldn’t even consider all of my 10s masterpieces, they’re either far above everything else I’ve read or watched or they just mean the most to me. I could give a Shit ton of 10s for sure, because there’s a lot of amazing series, I just don’t want to devalue my other ones, because I can’t place them higher than a 10. How can you give something like Berserk and something like P4 the same score? Unless you explicitly tell someone, they might think that you think Berserk is on the same level as P4 or Demon Slayer, which is a horrific take imo.
Yeah I understand. I used to rate like you do.
How come you changed up
I’d say Denji is far better than Yuji as a main character. I honestly don’t really see the hype in Yuji, his character isn’t that well developed imo. Aki's development for now is way ahead of Fushiguro’s and I prefer Power over Nobara. As for villains, I’d say it’s close but Makima stomps. Geto is one of my favourite characters from JJK but he’s dead and isn’t really the villain anymore (i.e. it’s not him in his body). I’d say that Shibuya arc was pretty good but at the same time it was full of a bunch of fights and not enough beyond that. Gun Devil arc and Control Devil arc are definitely 10/10s though. The power system in JJK is a lot better. Art is debatable, but I think both series are fairly equal in that aspect and definitely don’t have the best art, although it is good. Overall I’d go with CSM, only by a bit though.
Most people haven’t even seen Chainsaw Man.
What do you think?
