I mean to be fair it's kinda lost its hype after 10-20 years, compare it to a series like Attack on Titan, which I would say is objectively inferior in writing, yet it's wayyy more popular atm

More recent new hotness always seems more popular. I remember when Fairy Tail seemed like the most popular anime around, but as new things cam out, it faded. AoT will fade too, just probably not as much.

TBH, I'm surprised Evangelion has so much staying power. I guess if you keep coming out with stuff, even if there are many year gaps, it can stay popular.
