Film (also known as a "movie") in the context of anime usually refers to a single anime show usually longer than about 40 min that is intended to stand alone or is part of short series (usually 4 or less) of longer form anime shows intended to be shown in a movie theater. This is in contrast to ONA which is usually released on the internet for viewing, OVA which is usually included only with physical disc media (but may be broadcast or streamed), or a traditional TV anime series (usually 6 or more episodes).

Some exceptions to the short series pattern are movies based on very popular series like Detective Conan, Lupin III, Naruto or One Piece.
