GAINAX Co., Ltd. (株式会社ガイナックス, Kabushiki-gaisha Gainakkusu) was a Japanese anime studio founded on December 24, 1984 famous for productions such as Gunbuster, Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water, Neon Genesis Evangelion, FLCL, Gurren Lagann, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, which had garnered critical acclaim and been commercially successful early on. Evangelion has reportedly grossed over 150 billion yen, or approximately 1.2 billion USD. In a discussion at the 2006 Tekkoshocon, Matt Greenfield claimed Evangelion had grossed over 2 billion USD; Takeda reiterated in 2002 that "It sold record numbers of laserdiscs in Japan, and the DVD is still selling well today,", as well as for their association with award-winning anime director and studio co-founder Hideaki Anno. The company is headquartered in Koganei, Tokyo. Over the years, the studio had spun off many other studios (Gaina, Studio Khara, Studio Trigger, etc.) and suffered a long series of financial problems starting around 2012.
On June 7, 2024, the company announced on its website that it declared bankruptcy on May 29, 2024 and was closing after reaching an agreement with the court. Much of its intellectual property would transfer to Hideaki Anno's Studio Khara, a long time collaborator and partner.
