Garo: The Animation is a Japanese series of animated entries in the original Garo: the Golden Knight tokusatsu franchise, created by film and television director Keita Amemiya. The anime is set in the distant past compared to the contemporary settings of the live action series.

The first series entitled Garo: The Carved Seal of Flames (牙狼 -炎の刻印-, GARO -Honō no Kokuin-), premiered in October 2014, and was licensed for streaming in North America by Funimation. A film sequel entitled Garo: Divine Flame premiered in Japan on May 21, 2016.

The second anime entitled Garo: Crimson Moon (牙狼 -紅蓮ノ月-, GARO -Guren no Tsuki-) premiered in October 2015.

The third anime series entitled Garo: Vanishing Line (牙狼 -VANISHING LINE-) premiered in October 2017.


Carved Seal of Flames[]

In the fictional country of Valiante (modeled after Spain during the Spanish Inquisition), a series of witch hunts have resulted in the secret order of the Makai Knights and Alchemists to dwindle in number as they are executed for accused crimes of witchcraft against the Church. These hunts are the machinations of the evil Mendoza, an adviser to the King, who plans his revenge on them and to use their souls to attain ultimate power. However, during one of these executions, a Makai Alchemist gives birth to a baby as her husband rescues their newborn son from the flames of the burning stake.

17 years later, the grown teenager named Leon inherited his grandfather's armor, Garo, from his mother and become a Makai Knight to plan his revenge on Mendoza and destroy demonic entities known as Horrors with his father, Herman aka. The Makai Knight known as Zoro.

Crimson Moon[]

Set during the Heian Period of Japan, the Garo in this time is a young Japanese man named Raikou who cannot properly summon the Garo armor himself, but instead relies on his companion. A female Makai Alchemist named Seimei, whose Makai magic allows Raiko to do the armor and fight the Horrors infesting Heian-kyō. Accompanied by a young boy named Kintoki who wishes to follow in Raikou's footsteps, they confront against the evil Ashiya Douman, a fallen Makai Alchemist who summons the Horrors to destroy Japan's government and the Imperial family.

Vanishing Line[]

In the modern era of Russell City (a prosperous American city based on New York City), the Golden Knight Garo is a muscular man named Sword. The first to hear the first stirrings of the plot, and throws himself into a shadow war in order to expose it. His only clue is the key word "El Dorado.", and meets Sophie Heness, a woman searching for her missing older brother who has only left her with the same words: "El Dorado." With Sword having also lost his younger sister in the past, both are drawn together by the words, and work together to find out its meaning.
