Beyond the normal entertainment genres, anime and manga (or other related Japanese games, light novels, or related media) have specific genres that are demographic specific or not as used widely for other non-Japanese types of media.
Demographic genres
- Josei - for women usually over high school age
- Kodomo (Kodomomuke) - for young kids
- Seinen - for men usually over high school age
- Shōjo - for middle thru high school age girls
- Shōnen - for middle thru high school age boys
Relationship genres
- Harem/Reverse harem - typically featuring several females focusing o a male main character; "reverse" just means males focusing on a female
- Yaoi (or Shōnen Ai) - features romantic relationships between males
- Yuri (or Shōjo Ai) - features romantic relationships between females
Other genres
- Ecchi - sexualized without being pornographic (it's a fine line)
- Hentai - explicitly sexual or perverted
- Isekai - reincarnated or transported to another other world or universe
- Iyashikei - "healing" or relaxed
- Mecha - featuring (usually) giant mechanical robots, often piloted by non-mechanical creatures
- Slice of Life - not focused on a goal or quest; while not uniquely Japanese, seems more common in Japanese shows or stories
