Beyond the normal entertainment genres, anime and manga (or other related Japanese games, light novels, or related media) have specific genres that are demographic specific or not as used widely for other non-Japanese types of media.

Demographic genres

  • Josei - for women usually over high school age
  • Kodomo (Kodomomuke) - for young kids
  • Seinen - for men usually over high school age
  • Shōjo - for middle thru high school age girls
  • Shōnen - for middle thru high school age boys

Relationship genres

  • Harem/Reverse harem - typically featuring several females focusing o a male main character; "reverse" just means males focusing on a female
  • Yaoi (or Shōnen Ai) - features romantic relationships between males
  • Yuri (or Shōjo Ai) - features romantic relationships between females
