Junji Ito's work of horror, Uzumaki, depicts a small town cursed by supernatural events.
Horror is a class of fiction that is created with the intention of disturbing, scaring, or unsettling its audience. Oftentimes, horror is used to explore the larger fears of a society.
In Western media, horror is typically further divided into two sub-genres: psychological horror (focus on mental, emotional, or psychological states of the characters) and and supernatural horror (involving some sort of breach of physical laws of nature; for example, inclusion of monsters, ghosts, or other implausible creatures or scenarios). However, Japanese horror is well-known for its unique treatment of horror, often combining elements of the psychological and the supernatural sub-genres.
In manga and anime, horror remains diverse. Many works include extensive gore or violence, although this is far from being true for all horror works. Many other works will create feelings of tension, shock, disgust, or even loathing without the use of gore, instead utilizing various narrative elements to create an overall eerie, creepy, or unsettling tone in the story.
Horror is often combined with other genres. For example, Hellsing combines horror with Action; Gyo combines horror with Science Fiction; The Summer Hikaru Died combines horror with Slice of Life.
