The Moomins (Swedish: Mumintroll) are the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson, originally published in Swedish by Schildts in Finland, and has been adapted into the following Japanese anime.

  • Moomin, a 1969–70 Japanese anime TV series produced by Zuiyo Enterprise and animated by Mushi Productions and Tokyo Movie Shinsha, and part of the Calpis Comic Theater (later World Masterpiece Theater series.)
  • New Moomin, a 1972 remake of the 1969 anime series by the staff of its latter half, and part of the Calpis Comic Theater (later World Masterpiece Theater series.)
  • A Japanese-Dutch series titled Tales from Moominvalley (楽しいムーミン一家) produced by Telecable Benelux B.V. and animated by Telescreen Japan. The series was aired on TV Tokyo from April 12, 1990, to October 3, 1991, and haso been dubbed into English and aired on CBBC in the United Kingdom during the same year. The series helped fuel the "Moomin boom" of the 1990s, including an obsession with Moomin plush toys in Japan which eventually led to the production of a sequel series titled Delightful Moomin Family: Adventure Diary (楽しいムーミン一家 冒険日記, Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka: Bōken Nikki). It was aired on TV Tokyo from October 10, 1991, to March 26, 1992.
  • A Dutch-Japanese anime film titled Comet in Moominland (ムーミン谷の彗星), serving as a prequel to the 1990 anime series, which premiered on August 8, 1992.

Plot[]

A family of white, round trolls with large snouts that make them resemble the hippopotamus. They live in their house in Moominvalley, though in the past, their temporary residences have included a lighthouse and a theatre. They have had many adventures along with their various friends.
