Striped Island Tiger Shimajirō (しましまとらのしまじろう, Shima Shima Tora no Shimajirō) is a 1993 Japanese children's slice of life anime series by Pierrot Plus. It was created and directed by veteran director Hisayuki Toriumi, and the first series aired at TV Setouchi and all TXN TV networks in Japan from December 13, 1993, to March 31, 2008, becoming the 19th longest running anime in Japan from its debut to its final episode with a total of 726 episodes. The second series, Discover Experience Love! Shimajirō (はっけん たいけん だいすき! しまじろう, Hakken Taiken Daisuki! Shimajirō) premiered on April 7, 2008 and ended on March 29, 2010. The Third series, Shimajirō Belly Button (しまじろうヘソカ, Shimajirō Hesoka), premiered on April 5, 2010 and ended March 26, 2012. The current series, Shimajiro: A World of WOW! (しまじろうのわお!, Shimajirō no Wao) which introduced Nikki Momoyama and her family and wrote off Ramurin Makiba and her family, premiered on April 2, 2012. Starting from 2014, several animated films have come out with the most recent ones using 3D CG animation.

The entire series focuses on Shimajirō Shimano, a curious tiger boy living in Challenge Island. Being the second in the family, he attends Kindergarten alongside his friends as they all discover everything around them, and learn valuable lessons as they grow up.

There is a similar show from America called Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood can be most notably seen on PBS and is the spin-off to Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (1968-2001). Shimajiro has been on since before Mister Rogers went off the air and before Fred Rogers himself died. The Daniel Tiger cartoon aired later the same year that Nikki Momoyama was introduced which was on September 3, 2012. Nikki was introduced on April 2. Both shows have the lead characters to be a family of two sets of 4 tigers for both shows, both of which containing a pre-k/kindergartener older brother and baby/toddler younger sister (Shimajiro/Daniel, Hana/Margaret respectively. Albeit from 2012-2014 which was Season 1 of DTN, Margaret was not born yet, so, unlike Hana, she has not been on since day 1 of her show). Both Shimajiro and Daniel Tiger’s lives and plots of their shows and dynamics are the same. Like any edutainment wholesome program about friendship, both tiger shows follow Daniel and Shimajiro being no exception either on how to be good and many lessons on friendship and other valuable lessons in life while also having fun in their own ways. Although the tiger shows are alike, there’s still enough differences as well to distinguish, such as the nationality difference, a few minor differences in their families and having different friends or Shimajiro not being as known as much as Daniel, his “american counterpart”. It is not 100% confirmed on if this is a coincidence or not that there are two alike tiger shows with the same kind of immediate family members and dynamics but given it anyway Shimajiro can be lumped in inside a trilogy in between Mister Rogers and Daniel.
