Vinland Saga (ヴィンランド・サガ, Vinrando Saga) is a Japanese historical manga series written and drawn by award-winning manga author Makoto Yukimura. The series is published by Kodansha, and was first serialized in the youth-targeted Weekly Shōnen Magazine before moving to the monthly manga magazine Afternoon, aimed at younger adult men. As of June 2024, its chapters have been collected in 28 tankōbon volumes. The series is also licensed in English by Kodansha Comics USA.
Plot[]
Vinland Saga centers around the character of Thorfinn, a young warrior from the Viking age who's after revenge against Askeladd, his father's murderer, Thors. Driven by vengeance, the young Thorfinn signs on with Askeladd’s band of mercenaries and becomes a formidable fighter. As a young man, he forms himself into a weapon for the Viking wars, embroiling himself in an undercurrent of the political intrigue, and — fittingly — ending up attaining his vengeance against his enemy, Askeladd, by driving his blades through his heart, only to find his anger decomposing and devoid of purpose. Following his capture and enslavement by a Danish farmer, a man named Ketil, Thorfinn enters a period of self-reflection, and eventually, personal growth. As time goes on Thorfinn wrestles with his past and his actions, wishing for a new purpose beyond revenge and eventually dreams of a peaceful promised land he calls Vinland. These themes of violence, redemption, and the pursuit of something larger than yourself in a harsh universe are all present as the series delves into its gripping stories.
